I first came across the Buteyko method of controlling Asthma in an article in the Daily Mail some four or five years ago. Strangely enough, Jonathan Aitken, the former cabinet minister had undertaken the course and endorsed it's effectiveness.

I did nothing much about it as although I had been an asthmatic since I was eighteen months old and had been hospitalised once during my teens and once during my early twenties. Through controlled exercise running I had regained a good level of fitness and my asthma did not trouble me too much, although I was using Ventolin regularly as well as Pulmicort.
